Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease
Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is the most common chronic liver disease in the United States. MASLD occurs when fat builds up in the liver, often affecting individuals with high blood sugar, obesity, high cholesterol or high blood pressure. These fat deposits can damage the liver and may lead to severe scarring, known as cirrhosis. While most people with MASLD feel fine and show no symptoms, they are at a higher risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
